A profound closing thought for the night: having a fruit bar is liking having both fruit and a popsicle. Yum.

When you can easily split a peach in half with a butterknife, you know it is ripe and tasty.

What's the acoustic equivalent of a mental image? Mental music? I'm thinking of starting a collection of ones that amuse me, and so far I have the following:
  • Luciano Pavarotti singing "In the middle" by Jimmy Eat World
  • Big band jazz rendition of the Super Mario Brothers 2 theme song
In other news, my sandwich bread got moldy (and it's only Midweek! according to German). So I improvised and threw together a salad with spring greens, shredded sandwich meat, blueberries, and croutons crumbled from [livejournal.com profile] thomasyan's nigh-indestructible toast. It is very tasty.

Yesterday the shuttle to work was having trouble going up a sloped driveway, and could not make it even after all of us passengers disembarked. The driver ended up solving this problem by reversing direction and backing up the slope, which the bus did with remarkable ease. So how does it work that the bus cannot go up the slope forwards, but can do so perfectly fine backwards?

[livejournal.com profile] jadia, [livejournal.com profile] lokiect, and I went on a shopping spree at the Brighton Super 88 mid-morning yesterday. We procured fresh vegetables, fruits, snacks, cans, and frozen goodies, though the freezer was kind of cleared out by the time we got there.

Since I got most all the necessary ingredients, next in my queue of food adventures will be radish and meatball soup (菜頭貢丸湯). But instead of Chinese okra (菜瓜), I got a suspicious-looking "water squash", which I have not been able to identify, despite combing the internet for members of the Cucurbitaceae family. It's slightly squishy and has a black-and-green spotty pattern on the skin. We'll see if it works out okay....

Just got dinner from the Blue Shirt Cafe. A couple of old Asian men were screwing plastic tubing into the ceiling of the restaurant's entrance, and I heard one of them say, "Kam ū a-lú-mih ê thè-phù? A-lú-mih ê khah súi lah." (Is there alumnium tape? The aluminum stuff looks better.) I'm always struck by how nostalgic I get when I hear people speak my home dialect.

Earlier this year, I finally decided that my creeping lactose intolerance had become intolerable, and I started taking lactase enzyme supplements to compensate. But I still suffered various uncomfortable effects that shall remain nameless whenever I ate anything containing dairy--even with lactase--which meant that lactose was probably not the only culprit. So this past week, I have tried to keep a mostly dairy-free diet (except for a few indulgences in M&Ms and [livejournal.com profile] narya's chocolate mousse pie). Given that my stomach has calmed down drastically compared with the past few weeks, I think it's worked out pretty well.

Yesterday I went a-hunting for dark chocolate M&Ms at Star and was sorely disappointed. Why would anybody go back to regular M&Ms after having a taste of the Dark Side? But a rack of jars from Peanut Butter & Co caught my eye, and I found my new milk-free chocolate enjoyment: the vegan Dark Chocolate Dreams peanut butter! I dipped some carrots into it (don't try this at home) and fell instantly in love.

So there I was in the kitchen with a saucepan on the stove, pondering whether to make spicy stir-fried eggplant, when my mother came in with a sandwich-like concoction comprised of cheese, white bread with its crust removed, and some intriguing filling. I took a large bite and fell instantly in love with it. Then I woke up and felt an intense craving for food.

It was 3am when I had this dream, and I so wish I could remember what was in that sandwich.
