Last night, all the MGH people went off to a Korean restaurant for barbecue dinner. It was quite lovely, though the waiter didn't understand very much English, so my cider became Sprite. Everyone else just got some Korean beer named OB. (I didn't know that the current asking price for holding off on a grant proposal is three beers. Go figure.) We then took the subway to the Puck Building in Soho for the conference-wide party. Seeing a dance floor full of neuroimaging scientists is rather charming.
I had nothing scheduled today other than poster take-down, so I pressed my luck and tried to see some Broadway shows. For the 2 p.m. matinee I managed to get a pretty good seat for Rent, which was rather quite enjoyable (i.e. I bought the CDs after the show).
jadia convinced me to see Stomp later in the evening, which was in East Village at the Nederlander Theatre, a few blocks from Astor Place on 2nd Ave.
Getting into Stomp was a bit more tricky; they had sold out for the 7 p.m. showing, but apparently if you get there five minutes before showtime, extra tickets sometimes materialize. So I walked back towards the giant black cube of Astor Place (which, as it turns out, can actually rotate--my freshman year we found this out Thanksgiving weekend), and approached the Blue Man Group box office to see if they had tickets for their 8 p.m. showing. No such luck. But it was almost dinnertime, so I grabbed a bite at McDonald's and got back to the Nederlander. Fifteen minutes before the show, they were now selling tickets for cash only! Yay :) And it was really quite impressive, though I had the feeling I wouldn't be quite as enthralled by their recording, so I slipped away quietly afterwards.
As I got back to Astor Place, I noticed the giant K-Mart, an anomaly in this area of Manhatten. Last time I was here in '98 I didn't get a chance to fully explore this urban phenomenon until closing time, so this time I was sure to experience every square foot of it. It even has a basement entrance to the subway station! (Actually, I only went in for duct tape, but it's a little more exciting if you play it up.)

Date: 2003-06-30 10:35 pm (UTC)Is it typical for neuroimaging conferences to have dance parties? That sounds pretty nifty. Math conferences usually have banquets, where there's a lot of eating (and scribbling math on napkins), but I've never seen dancing.

Date: 2003-07-03 09:33 pm (UTC)This was actually the first neuroimaging conference I've been to, their not actually being in my field and all (but useful for my thesis). :) It seems that they really do know how to enjoy themselves, dancing and drinking and whatever else they were doing while I wasn't noticing. I think they might have had a banquet too, but I didn't get to the conference till the third day.
