I bought a mute and tuning fork and blew the dust off my violin. It's amazing how much muscle memory I have retained, even though I haven't really practiced in eight years. (The obligatory once-a-year-or-so retuning and playing don't count.) My learning material is somewhat limited, but one can only practice so much at a time.

Much like exercise, I have a feeling that I'd keep this up a lot better if I were to play my violin in a group setting. But now that I'm not a student any more, I ought to have time, right?

N.B. If you don't practice for a while, your fingers are no longer used to the pressure of the strings, and your neck is no longer used to the end pin. Hence the ow.

Yeah, I picked mine back up the other day, and was amazed both by my ineptitude and what I could do right. Good: position shifts, vibrato, instinctive memory of second-finger positioning in first position. Bad: tune, bow-holds, posture.
