This is what happens when I don't get enough sleep

I lay awake in bed in the middle of the night and wondered what will become of the goofy glasses people wear for New Year's. You know, the ones where the frame is in the shape of the year in numerals (2007, say), and the two middle zeroes surround your eyes. What happens when the year 2011 hits?

I guess they will bump into stuff, since they'll only have one eyehole in their goofy glasses and have no depth perception. 2111 will be the real tragedy - imagine Times Square filled with thousands of blind people....

hmm, I was going to say "what happened before 2000?" But then I realized that everything from 1978 all the way up until 2010 will have two circles somewhere in the date. So I guess the question is "What did people do for goofy new years glasses in 1977?"

That reminds me - did anybody actually come up with a name for the decade? We're already over halfway through it, and I still don't know what to call it. Eightys, Nineties, ____?

Ay, maybe they'll start making goofy hairbands with the numbers on top instead. I can just imagine the 1s getting broken off and stabbing people in the eye....

At some point I heard people referring to 2000s as the Aughts. But I don't think it has entirely caught on. We could be snooty and call it the fin de siècle though that doesn't really refer to the decade. Wait another twenty years and maybe there'll be a sitcom called "That '00s Show", and we'll finally have figured it out.
